Spring Maintenance
Extend Their Life
Regular maintenance can add 2-3 years to your garage door spring lifespan. These six tasks take less than 30 minutes and can save you hundreds in premature replacement costs.
Lubricate springs every 6 months
Every 6 monthsUse white lithium grease or silicone spray on all spring coils. Never use WD-40 (it's a degreaser, not a lubricant).
Visual inspection quarterly
Every 3 monthsLook for rust, gaps in coils, signs of wear, or uneven stretching. Check cables for fraying too.
Test door balance annually
AnnuallyDisconnect opener, lift door halfway. It should stay put. If it falls or rises, springs need adjustment.
Check hardware and brackets
Every 6 monthsEnsure all brackets, bolts, and rollers are tight and in good condition. Loose hardware puts extra strain on springs.
Keep tracks clean and aligned
Every 3 monthsMisaligned tracks cause uneven spring wear. Wipe tracks and check alignment regularly.
Replace both springs together
At replacementIf one spring breaks, replace the pair. The second spring is the same age and will likely fail soon.
Seasonal Maintenance Schedule
| Season | Tasks |
|---|---|
| Spring (March-April) | Full inspection after winter. Lubricate springs, check for rust, test door balance. Check weatherstripping. |
| Summer (June-July) | Lubricate springs. Clean tracks. Check cable tension and look for fraying. |
| Fall (September-October) | Full inspection before winter. Lubricate springs, tighten hardware, check track alignment. |
| Winter (December-January) | Lubricate springs (cold causes metal contraction). Check door seal. Watch for condensation/rust. |
What Lubricant to Use
- Best choice: White lithium grease spray — adheres well, lasts months, temperature resistant
- Also good: Silicone-based garage door lubricant spray — clean, no dripping
- Never use: WD-40 — it is a degreaser/solvent, NOT a lubricant. It strips existing lubrication and causes springs to dry out faster
- Never use: Motor oil or other liquid lubricants — they attract dirt and can drip onto vehicles
Cost of prevention vs replacement: A can of white lithium grease costs $5-$8 and lasts for years of biannual application. 30 minutes of maintenance twice a year can delay a $200-$350 spring replacement by 2-3 years — that is a return on investment of over 5,000%.
